Medicare Parts

Medicare is divided into parts — each covering different healthcare services. Here's what you need to know.

Part A

Hospital Insurance

Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.

What It Covers

  • Inpatient hospital care
  • Skilled nursing facility care (after a qualifying hospital stay)
  • Hospice care
  • Some home health care

Cost Overview

Most people don't pay a premium for Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.

Part B

Medical Insurance

Part B covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

What It Covers

  • Doctor visits and outpatient services
  • Preventive screenings and vaccines
  • Durable medical equipment
  • Mental health services
  • Some home health care

Cost Overview

Part B has a standard monthly premium. The amount may be higher based on your income.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurers approved by Medicare. They bundle Parts A and B, and often include additional benefits.

What It Covers

  • All Part A and Part B benefits
  • Often includes prescription drug coverage
  • May include dental, vision, and hearing
  • May include fitness and wellness programs

Cost Overview

Costs vary by plan. Some plans have $0 premiums in addition to your Part B premium.

Part D

Prescription Drug Coverage

Part D adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare. It is offered through private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

What It Covers

  • Prescription medications
  • Coverage varies by plan formulary
  • Available as a standalone plan or bundled with Medicare Advantage

Cost Overview

Premiums, deductibles, and copays vary by plan. Late enrollment penalties may apply if you don't sign up when first eligible.

Additional Coverage Options

Medigap (Medicare Supplement)

Medigap policies are sold by private companies and help pay some of the healthcare costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Special Needs Plans (SNPs)

SNPs are a type of Medicare Advantage plan tailored for people with specific diseases, conditions, or characteristics, such as those who are dual-eligible for Medicare and Medicaid.
